Is Mexico Safe for Travelers?

Linden Travel consultants recently attended an event held by Virtuoso and the Mexico Tourism Board to discuss travel and tourism in Mexico. The event was held locally, at New York’s St. Regis Hotel. All attendees seemed eager to support and sell the destination, following the swine flu crisis that hit Mexico’s tourism industry hard.

Most travel consultants and suppliers believe that it is safe to go to Mexico now.  Participating suppliers reported they are beginning to receive serious queries and some new bookings.  However, 2009 remains the year of the best value for travel to Mexico!

Our latest Select Escapes newsletter features some great Mexico travel specials including, free flights, free nights, and resort credits equal to 100% of the room rate.

When asked our clients and consultants about their favorite places on earth, we received so many great responses.  Here is the lastest list of top 5 destinations, with a focus on golf.  We asked Phil Orchin to share some of his expertise.  With decades of experience in adventure and sports related travel, it wasn’t hard for Phil to share his personal experiences playing some of these courses.   This list is full of ideas for your next golf getaway.

St. Andrews' Old Course

St. Andrews' Old Course

Pebble Beach, CA

In 2010, Pebble Beach Golf Links will be hosting the US Open Championship for the fifth time.  The legendary golf course has been the site of many historic wins by golf’s greatest players, the latest being Tiger Woods in 2000.  Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, it is known as one of the most challenging courses in the world.  The breathtaking ocean-side location, bordered by pristine forest, adds to its charm.

  • Where to Stay – Pebble Beach Resorts
  • Why? World class golf and one of the best spas on the west coast

St Andrews, Scotland

St. Andrews is home to the world’s oldest golf course and is a favorite among the greatest names in golf.  Out of five amazing courses including The New Course, The Castle Course, The Jubilee Course, and Kingsbarn Golf Links, the Old Course remains one of the most unique with its seven rolling double greens that make the short game almost a course unto itself.

  • Stay – Old Course Hotel
  • Why? The world’s oldest golf course and the resort’s new Kohler Waters Spa, the latest spa innovation in the U.K.
Pinehurst Golf Resort

Pinehurst Golf Resort

Pinehurst, NC

To play at Pinehurst is to experience one of the finest golf courses in the U.S.  Pinehurst is rich in golf history, from Hogan’s first professional win to Jack Nicklaus dramatic 1999 US Open win.  Scheduled to host the 2014 US Open Championship for the tenth time, the Pinehurst experience is comparable only to a few courses in the world.

  • Stay – Pinehurst Golf Resort.
  • Why? The resort’s eight renowned golf course and the famed Pinehurst Golf Academy.
The Challenge at Manele Bay

The Challenge at Manele Bay

The Challenge, Lana’i, HI
Designed by the great Jack Nicklaus, The Challenge was opened in December 1993 and offers stunning views of the majestic Pacific Ocean.  The course was built on lava outcroppings and features three holes on cliffs, sweeping ocean views, and a five-tee concept that challenges even the best golfers.

  • Stay – Four Seasons Resort Lana’i at Manele Bay
  • Why? The resort has one of the world’s best golf course and one of the best spas in the Americas.

The Experience, Lana’i, HI

Situated on a plateau 2000 feet above sea level with sweeping views of Maui and the Molokai mountain, the Greg Norman designed course, The Experience, offers a contrast to its ocean-side sister course, The Challenge in Manele Bay.  Number 17 is the course’s signature hole that plays from a 250 foot elevated tee to a fairway framed by a lake on one side and a dense foliage on the other.

  • Stay – Four Seasons Resort Lanai, The Lodge at Koele
  • Why? Hidden within the central highlands on the private island of Lana’i guarantees peace, quiet, and privacy, not to mention the legendary Four Seasons brand of service.

We would love to hear about your experience with these golf courses and suggested resorts.  If you have additional suggestions of if you would like to book a golf vacation with Linden Travel, please contact us at request@lindentravel.com or call your travel consultant.

Summer Getaway Idea: Montreal’s Jazz Festival 30th Anniversary

By Jessica Burneston

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the annual Jazz fest in Montreal.  The festival will run from July 1 – 12, 2009 and will include 3,000 artists from 30 countries.  The Festivals website lists more than 650 concerts including 450 free outdoor performances.

Many Montreal hotels are offering packages with exceptional value.  There is still space available, but most hotels will sell out during the festival, so if the Jazz fest makes your “must-do” list for the summer, book early for the best selection.

Getting there can also be fun!  Of course, there are convenient short flights to Montreal by several major airlines, but another idea for New Yorkers is to take a train to the festival.  The Montrealer, leaves New York’s Penn station daily and travels through the Adirondack mountains for breathtaking scenery.  The trip is considered one of the most scenic train trips in North America and is considered a green mode of transportation.

Speaking of being green, the Montreal Jazz Fest is carbon neutral.  An independent company calculates the CO2 emissions of everything associated with the festival, and then that carbon is off-set by donating to environmental projects.

Passports are required for entry into Canada.  Passport cards and enhanced driver’s licenses are also accepted.  However, regular driver’s licenses will no longer be accepted for travel to Canada after June 1, 2009.
